• Learn the bonds of 10

Students take turns to find pairs of matching question and answer cards to complete the bond of 10.

Spread the cards face down, on the table. Placing cards in a regular pattern helps students remember where they are on the table. In example, placing the missing addend cards in one column and the answer cards in another column.

Student A turns up a question card and reads it. The student then says the number that they are looking for.

Example: Card is  3 + ___ = 10 . Student says: 3 plus what equals 10? I am looking for a 7. Or they could say: 3 and 7 equals 10, so I need to find a 7.

Student A turns up an answer card. If the answer is the required number, the student keeps the cards and has another turn.

If the answer is not correct, the student says the number that would be required to make 10 with the answer card.

Example: Student is looking for 7 but turns up 8. Student says: 8 and 2 makes 10.

Student turns both cards face down. (Note: It is essential that the cards always remain in the same position on the table.)

Student B has a turn.

The winner is the student with the most cards when all the cards have been collected.

This activity also could be modified to be an independent matching activity for students to examine all dot pattern cards and all doubles and near doubles question cards face up and find the corresponding matches until they have successfully matched each pair.
