PK.N.1.1

PK.N.1.1 Count aloud forward in sequence by 1s to 20.

In a Nutshell

This objective addresses rote counting, which is a basic number concept where students name numbers in sequential order. Counting is a foundational skill that builds toward one-to-one correspondence and number sense. By the end of Pre-K students should be able to count forward by 1s to 20.

Student Actions

Teacher Actions

  • Develop conceptual understanding through participation in rote counting games, songs, and activities.

  • Advance procedural fluency through repeated participation in counting activities.

  • Develop productive disposition by recognizing patterns in counting.

  • Promote conceptual understanding and procedural fluency by providing multiple exposures to rote counting tasks (songs, books, games, etc.)

  • Implement tasks that promote reasoning and problem-solving bycalling attention topatterns within the numerical sequence.

  • Connect mathematical representations by modeling, pointing to, and counting numbers on a number line from left to right.

Key Understandings

Misconceptions

  • Rote memorization of number names.

  • Begin to see patterns of numbers and their names.

  • Saying any sequence of numbers is counting (1, 4, 3, 6, etc.)

  • Counting aloud is the same as being able to count objects. One-to-one correspondence is secondary to rote counting.

  Knowledge Connections

Prior Knowledge

Leads to

  • Understand numbers represent “how many”

  • Understand the concept of sequencing/building on
