PK.N.2.1

PK.N.2.1 Identify the number of objects, up to 10, in a row or column.

In a Nutshell

This objective focuses on counting and identifying how many objects are in a collection from one to ten.  The collections of items are used in a way for students to learn strategies that help keep track of what they have counted and what they have not counted. This skill sets the foundation for subitizing (the ability to recognize how many are in a collection of objects without counting individually).

Student Actions

Teacher Actions

  • Construct understanding by identifying the number of objects in front of them.

  • Engage in problem-solving by using tools and manipulatives like ten frames and counters.

  • Develop reasoning by using manipulatives to represent numbers within rows or columns.

  • Establish a focus on learning by modeling counting in an organized fashion.

  • Implement tasks that promote reasoning by providing many opportunities for students to count objects. This can be done throughout the day with students, snacks, supplies for activities, etc.

  • Support productive struggle by providing manipulatives and tools for students to use and modeling vocabulary.

Key Understandings

Misconceptions

  • One-to-one correspondence.

  • Number sequence.

  • Counting an object more than once.

  • Skipping numbers when counting.

  • Arrangement of objects changes the number of objects (lacking conservation of number).
