PK.GM.2.3 Sort objects into sets by one or more attributes.

In a Nutshell

The ability to identify similarities and differences is essential for students to be able to sort and group objects. By the end of Pre-K, students are expected to sort objects by one or more characteristics.

Student Actions

Teacher Actions

  • Build conceptual understanding by identifying one similarity of some of the objects and one difference such as color, size, or shape.
  • Communicate mathematically by explaining how they sorted the objects.
  • Establish mathematics goals by modeling how to find similarities and differences between two objects and by modeling sorting objects into two groups.
  • Build procedural fluency and mathematical reasoning by providing opportunities for students to sort and explain how they sorted objects.

Key Understandings

Misconceptions

  • Groups of objects can have similarities and differences.
  • Sorting is putting things that are the same together.
  • Not applying the sorting rule consistently to the entire set.
