PK.GM.1.1 Recognize squares, circles, triangles, and rectangles by pointing to the shape when given the name.


In a Nutshell

Students entering Pre-K may recognize a few common shapes. By the end of the year, students should be able to identify the correct shape by pointing when given the name of a basic shape.

  • Build conceptual understanding by identifying shapes when asked to point to them.
  • Communicate mathematically by discussing the shapes with their peers.  Ex. what they notice about the shapes, how they know what which shape is which.
  • Establish mathematics goals by introducing the four shapes and their names.
  • Facilitate meaningful math discourse by allowing students to talk about the shapes.
  • Promote reasoning and problem solving by providing opportunities for students to explore and manipulate the shapes.
