PK.A.1.1 Sort and group up to 5 objects into a set based upon characteristics such as color, size, and shape and explain verbally what the objects have in common.

In a Nutshell

Students entering Pre-K are developing the ability to compare and identify traits that are the same. By the end Pre-K, students need to be able to sort objects into groups based on a common attribute and tell how and why they completed the sort.

Student Actions

Teacher Actions

  • Advance mathematical reasoning by sorting objects into sets based on shared characteristics.
  • Communicating mathematically by explaining how and why they sorted the objects.
  • Elicit evidence of thinking by encouraging students to explain their thinking by asking why.
  • Facilitate mathematical discourse by providing opportunities for students to sort objects and explain their thinking in small groups and whole group.
  • Support productive struggle by providing opportunities for the students to sort the same objects multiple times such as in centers.

Key Understandings

Misconceptions

  • Identification of shared attributes of objects.
  • Misunderstand what an attribute is.
  • Unable to sort by one attribute at a time.  Ex. this pile is purple and this pile is circles.
  • Trouble staying consistent after sorting several objects the same way.
