PK.A.1.1 Sort and group up to 5 objects into a set based upon characteristics such as color, size, and shape and explain verbally what the objects have in common.
In a Nutshell
Students entering Pre-K are developing the ability to compare and identify traits that are the same. By the end Pre-K, students need to be able to sort objects into groups based on a common attribute and tell how and why they completed the sort.

Teacher Actions
|
- Advance mathematical reasoning by sorting objects into sets based on shared characteristics.
- Communicating mathematically by explaining how and why they sorted the objects.
|
- Elicit evidence of thinking by encouraging students to explain their thinking by asking why.
- Facilitate mathematical discourse by providing opportunities for students to sort objects and explain their thinking in small groups and whole group.
- Support productive struggle by providing opportunities for the students to sort the same objects multiple times such as in centers.
|
Key Understandings
|
Misconceptions
|
- Identification of shared attributes of objects.
