PK.N.1.1 Count aloud forward in sequence by 1s to 20.
In a Nutshell
Most students enter Pre-K with an evolving concept that numbers represent “how many”. Rote counting is a basic number concept where students name numbers in sequential order. Counting is a vital skill necessary for building number concepts and meaningful counting. By the end of Pre-K students should be able to count forward by 1s to 20.
Student Actions

Teacher Actions
|
- Constructing conceptual understanding through participating in counting games, songs, and physical activities that encourage rote counting.
- Advancing procedural fluency through participating in counting activities.
- Developing productive disposition by engaging in counting activities.
|
- Implement tasks that promote reasoning by providing multiple exposures to rote counting (songs, books, games, etc.)
- Connect mathematical representations by modeling pointing to and counting numbers on a number line counting from left to right.
|
Key Understandings
|
Misconceptions
|
- Rote memorization of number names.
