K.D.1.3 Draw conclusions from real-object and picture graphs.

In a Nutshell

This objective is a deeper understanding of K.D.1.2.  By the end of kindergarten, students presented with a completed graph should be able to answer questions about the information in the graph.  These questions need to cover a range of understanding such as, “What do you notice about the graph?” to “Which _____ has the most?”

Student Actions

Teacher Actions

  • Develop the ability to generalize by explaining what they notice about the graph.

  • Develop conceptual understanding by exploring and discussing graphs.
  • Pose purposeful questions to allow students to demonstrate understanding of the information in a graph.
  • Facilitate meaningful mathematical discourse by providing opportunities for students to share what they notice about the information in a graph.

Key Understandings

Misconceptions

  • How to read the information on a graph.
  • Graphs give us quantifiable information

  • Misinterpreting the data on a graph.
  • Failure to notice things such as the longest column has the most, the shortest column has the least.
