K.D.1.1 Collect and organize information about objects and events in the environment.

In a Nutshell

At the beginning of kindergarten, students begin collecting data by counting 2 or more sets of objects in a group. As the year progresses, they will organize their thoughts (ex. sorting the objects) and express their thinking.

Student Actions

Teacher Actions

  • Demonstrate deep conceptual understanding by recognizing similarities and patterns in groups of objects.

  • Communicate mathematically by explaining their thinking about how they organized data and/or objects.

  • Develop strategies for problem solving by using manipulatives or recording tools to organize information.
  • Implement tasks that promote reasoning by providing opportunities for collecting information.

  • Pose purposeful questions to provide the students with opportunities to discuss/explain  how they organized their data.

  • Facilitate meaningful discourse by helping students record or organize information.

Key Understandings

Misconceptions

  • Counting is a way to gather data.
