K.GM.2.2 Order up to 6 objects using measurable attributes, such as length and weight.

In a Nutshell

Once kindergarten students have been introduced to comparative vocabulary (K.GM.2.1) they will begin to put objects in order by their measurable attributes. Begin by introducing a small number of objects, and once the students are able to order them, increase the number of objects to 6.

Student Actions

Teacher Actions

  • Communicate mathematically by using words to compare objects (length, weight, etc.)
  • Build procedural fluency by putting objects in order (length, weight, etc.)

  • Develop a Productive Mathematical Disposition  by comparing various objects to determine order based on measureable attributes.
  • Focus learning by modeling how to order objects
  • Build conceptual understanding by providing multiple opportunities for students to put objects in order.

  • Facilitate meaningful discourse by encouraging students to explain their thinking using attributive language such as length and weight.

Key Understandings

Misconceptions

  • Ordering objects by measurable attributes (graduated order).

  • Only able to order 3 objects (ex: small, medium, large).
