K.GM.1.6 Use basic shapes and spatial reasoning to represent objects in the real world.
In a Nutshell
Once kindergarten students have a solid understanding of the basic shapes, they will begin to see these shapes in objects around them. Spatial reasoning allows the students to begin to see a 3D object represented as a 2D shape (a clock face looks like a circle). By the end of kindergarten, students should be able to identify the shape of real world objects and represent them in drawings.
Student Actions
Teacher Actions
- Build conceptual understanding by providing opportunities for students to identify shapes in the world around them.
- Implement tasks that promote reasoning by allowing students to use basic shapes to create real world objects.
Key Understandings
Misconceptions
- Flat shapes can be seen in real world objects (a TV is a rectangle).
- Shapes can be used to draw objects found in the real world.
- At this point in child development, there are no true misconceptions. Students are building upon any prior knowledge.
