K.GM.1.3 Identify attributes of two-dimensional shapes using informal and formal geometric language interchangeably.
In a Nutshell
Kindergarten students need multiple exposures to two-dimensional shapes in different sizes and orientations. Once students are able to fluently identify two-dimensional shapes by name, they will begin to use informal and formal language to describe their similarities, differences, parts (ex: number of sides and vertices/“corners”) and other attributes (ex: having sides of equal or different length).
Student Actions
Teacher Actions
- Develop mathematical reasoning by sorting two-dimensional shapes by their attributes.
- Communicate mathematically by engaging in discussions about the similarities and differences of two-dimensional shapes.
- Focus student learning by providing opportunities to see shapes in a variety of sizes and orientations.
- Pose purposeful questions to encourage students to communicate their thinking and reasoning.
- Implement tasks through play that promote geometric vocabulary.

Key Understandings
Misconceptions
- Only recognizing a shape if it is oriented a certain way.
