K.N.1.7 Find a number that is 1 more or 1 less than a given number up to 10.

In a Nutshell

At the beginning of kindergarten, students build and solidify a foundation of counting numbers. By the end of the year, students should be able to identify one more and one less of a given number using either comparison or counting strategies.

Student Actions

Teacher Actions

  • Build conceptual understanding by comparing quantities and numbers.
  • Develop procedural fluency by counting to figure out what comes before and after.
  • Focusing learning by providing opportunities and games for students to explore and practice. Ex. Using number lines to find answers and show evidence of understanding.

  • Eliciting evidence of student thinking through teacher questioning and student discussion (“How do you know?”).

Key Understandings

Misconceptions

  • Less means fewer/smaller; more means greater/bigger.

  • Hierarchical inclusion- Numbers build by exactly one at each count.
  • Naming any number smaller or bigger than a given number.
  • Misunderstanding of less and more.
