K.N.1.5 Count forward, with and without objects, from any given number up to 10.

In a Nutshell

Students entering kindergarten should be able to count by 1s to 20. Once they are able to rote count, students can begin to count forward by beginning on any number without having to start over with 1. This can be difficult at first because it conflicts with the original counting strategy they’ve been taught and practiced. The ability to count on from any number helps students to develop deep understanding of number sequence and patterns. Counting forward can also be used as an addition strategy in 1st grade.

Student Actions

Teacher Actions

  • Build conceptual understanding by counting forward and backward (with and without objects) in a variety of contexts, Ex. snack count, number of friends at a center, blocks needed for a building, etc.
  • Develop strategies to model the ability to count forward  from any number up to 10, starting with a number other than 0 or 1, through games and activities.
  • Implement tasks that promote reasoning by providing multiple opportunities for counting forward and backward (with and without objects) Ex. missing number activities (ex: __, 5, 6).
  • Support productive struggle by providing students with opportunities to use their own reasoning strategies to solve the problem of what number comes next.

Key Understandings

Misconceptions

  • Counting can begin from any number, not just 1.
  • You are only adding one each time you count when counting by 1s.
  • In order to count, you must begin with 1.
  • When starting to count with a different number, you skip count.
