K.N.1.2 Recognize that a number can be used to represent how many objects are in a set up to 10.

In a Nutshell

At the beginning of the year, kindergarten students should be able to identify the number 0 and know that it is a count of no objects. By the end of the first semester, students should be able to use (identify, write, speak, or indicate in some other way) numerals 1-10 to indicate how many are in a set.

Student Actions

Teacher Actions

  • Develop a deep conceptual understanding of numbers by using multiple strategies to count objects using one-to-one correspondence.

  • Communicate mathematically by writing, speaking or using different mediums and manipulatives to indicate how many.

  • Build procedural fluency by developing strategies for counting through multiple tasks and activities throughout the day..

  • Pose purposeful questions to encourage counting and elicit discussion of counting strategies.(“How many people are at your table?” or “how many bears do I have?”or “How many items are in this set?”).

Key Understandings

Misconceptions

  • Objects are only counted once
  • The last number said indicates how many are in the set

  • Changing the arrangement of the set does not change the number

  • Any number can be used to indicate the sum in a defined set

  • Continuing to count after all objects have been counted

  • Counting a different amount when the shape or structure of the set has changed
  • Saying more than one number when counting objects in a set
