1.GM.2.2 Illustrate that the length of an object is the number of same-size units of length that when laid end-to-end with no gaps or overlaps, reach from one end of the object to the other.

In a Nutshell

This objective engages students in activities that focus on investigating how to measure objects accurately. Students will apply practical uses of measurement in the classroom. This objective builds procedural fluency when measuring objects with non-standard and standard units.

Student Actions

Teacher Actions

  • Develop a deep and flexible conceptual understanding as students correctly measure length using a variety of standard and non-standard units such as-paper clips, straws, popsicle sticks, snap cubes, etc.

  • Develop procedural fluency by properly applying strategies to measure objects without overlapping or gaps using standard and nonstandard units.

  • Students will develop strategies for problem solving when using a variety of tools to measure objects and check the reasonableness of their solution.

  • Developing mathematical disposition and develop the ability to make conjectures, model, and generalize by solving real-world problems while they earn how to use measurement tools such as rulers, measuring tapes, and meter sticks to measure to the nearest whole unit.

  • Communicating using appropriate measurement vocabulary while comparing and explaining measurements and the process of measuring.
  • Facilitate meaningful math discourse as students use a variety of non standard units of measure for same object.

  • Pose purposeful questions including:  What are you measuring?  What unit are you using to measure?  Would you need more _____ or ____ to measure the length of _________?

  • Elicit and use evidence of student thinking as they challenge students by matching specific units to specific objects during measurement tasks.

  • Support productive struggle as they provide opportunities to measure a variety objects with a variety of tools.

Key Understandings

Misconceptions

  • Actively measure by repeating a single unit multiple times using a non-standard item, such as paper clips laid end to end with no gaps or overlaps. This will reinforce the linear nature of measurement.
  • It is OK to overlap units or leave gaps between units when measuring.

  • They can start and end units anywhere when measuring the length of an object.

  • Units used to measure can be of mixed sizes.
