1.N.4.3 Determine the value of a collection of pennies, nickels, or dimes up to one dollar counting by ones, fives, or tens.


In a Nutshell

Students will determine the value of a collection of coins by counting by 1s, 5s, or 10s, up to one dollar.  Students will use groups made up of only one type of coin and determine the value of the coins within that group. (i.e. only pennies, nickels, or dimes) Students will use skip counting as a strategy to count coins up to one dollar and skip counting by 5's and 10's should be practiced routinely before counting groups of nickels and groups of dimes.

  • Develop a deep and flexible conceptual understanding when counting sets of like coins and their value (pennies, nickels and dimes) through card matching games, one-to-one correspondence.

  • Develop accurate and appropriate procedural fluency as students determine the value (up to one dollar) of a group of dimes, nickels or pennies individually. Students will need many experiences counting pennies, nickels, or dimes.

  • Developing mathematical reasoning as students gain strategies during small group games for like counting coins in a collection of dimes, nickels, and pennies up to one dollar. Developing the ability to make conjectures, model, and generalize by applying skip counting by 5’s or 10’s when counting a collection of like coins including nickels or dimes.
  • Implement tasks that promote reasoning and problem solving by offering students the opportunity to explore counting collections of like coins during small group and whole group instruction using a variety of activities and tools.

  • Use and connect mathematical representations and elicit student thinking by allowing the students to explore the value of a collection of like coins by counting or skip counting the value of the coins.

  • Pose purposeful and meaning questions such as Using only dimes, nickels or pennies, how many ___ can make _____, how many ways can you make 25¢, 50¢, $1.00? Can you tell explain another way to make _____?
