A2.A.2.4 Rewrite expressions involving radicals and rational exponents using the properties of exponents.

In a Nutshell

Students will confidently rewrite radical expressions as rational exponents and vice versa.

Student Actions

Teacher Actions

  • Students will develop a conceptual understanding of exponents and their operations and will develop an understanding of the application of those operations to rational exponents.

  • Students will develop accurate procedural fluency for the algorithm for converting exponential expressions to radical expressions and vice versa.

  • Pose purposeful questions that build on their knowledge of exponents, but do not overtake or funnel, student thinking.

  • Implement tasks that provide students with opportunities for converting between radicals and rational exponents.

Key Understandings

Misconceptions

  • Apply knowledge of the relationship between rational exponents and radicals to convert between the two forms confidently.
  • Understand that rational exponents are equivalent to radicals, written in a different form.

  • Students mistake a number raised to power and then a root as different than a number taken to a root raised to a power (ex is equivalent to
  • Students will place the root in the numerator when converting from a radical to a rational exponent.
  • Students do not recognize that rational exponents are equivalent to radicals and can be rewritten to either form.
