2.N.4.2 Use a combination of coins to represent a given amount of money up to one dollar.


In a Nutshell     

Students entering second grade have practiced identifying coins, writing a number with a cent symbol to describe the value of a single coin, and determining the value of a collection of pennies, nickels, and dimes. In second grade, they will build upon this knowledge by using coins to represent a given amount up to one dollar. They continue to use ONLY the cent sign. Second graders also begin to use quarters in combination with pennies, nickels, and dimes when representing a given amount of money.

  • Develop strategies for problem solving by analyzing the parts of problems involving representing a given amount of money using a combination of coins and identifying entry points to begin the search for a solution. Students will use corresponding multiple representations (verbal, physical, symbolic, pictorial, graphical, tabular) when appropriate. They will find methods to verify their answers in context and will always question the reasonableness of solutions.

  • Develop a productive mathematical disposition by exploring and communicating a variety of reasoning strategies to think through problems involving representing a given amount of money using a combination of coins.
