A1.A.3.1 Solve equations involving several variables for one variable in terms of the others.
In a Nutshell
Students will solve equations with multiple variables for a specific variable in order to solve linear equations for graphing and to write equivalent formulas, building on pre-algebra properties of solving equations.

Teacher Actions
|
- Students will develop accurate and appropriate procedural fluency when solving equations of varying types and manipulatIng equations by using inverse properties.
- Students will develop a deep and flexible conceptual understanding as previous knowledge of solving one-variable multi-step equations is applied to solving equations with multiple variable
|
-
Build procedural fluency from conceptual understanding by guiding students to apply previous knowledge of solving equations to manipulating literal equations and solving real-world situations.
-
Pose purposeful questions to assess students’ reasoning as they solve for a variable and justify their thinking.
- Implement tasks that promote reasoning and problem solving by helping students to interpret the solution in the original context of the problem

Key Understandings
|
Misconceptions
|
-
Accurately solve literal equations for a single variable using algebraic properties of equality.
-
Justify work when solving.
-
Interpret the solution correctly in the context of the problem.
Example:
Solve d = rt for r
Example:
What is the slope of the line with equation
3x + 2y = 8?
3x + 2y = 8
2y = –3x + 8
y = ( –3/2 ) x + 4
Interpretation: Then the slope is m = –3/2.
