3.GM.2.4 Choose an appropriate measurement instrument and measure the length of objects to the nearest whole yard, whole foot, or half inch.

In a Nutshell

In second grade, students learn how measurements relate to an object. They explore using rulers and how their units help describe the object. In third grade, students learn how and when to use a particular measuring tool, such as rulers, yardsticks, and measuring tape, to measure items to the nearest yard, foot, and half inch. Learning how to successfully measure with these units help students in fourth grade when they are to measure objects to the nearest quarter inch.

Student Actions

Teacher Actions

  • Develop mathematical reasoning by logically determining which tool to use to measure an object based on its size and shape.

  • Demonstrate procedural fluency by accurately measuring the object to the nearest whole foot, yard, and half inch.

  • Communicate mathematically as they prove measurements using concrete tools, such as rulers, yardsticks, and measuring tape, and describe measurements using proper vocabulary and labels.

  • Pose purposeful questions to help students recall prior knowledge and justify their thinking. Questions may include: Which tool should we use to measure this item and why? What is the most effective way to measure? Can you predict the length of this object based on another measurement you have made?

  • Implement real life tasks where they would choose an appropriate tool and measure items.

  • Support productive struggle as students problem solve. For example: Have students measure an item that does not start at the “0”. Instead of showing the procedure, challenge them to determine the measurement and share their reasoning behind it.

Key Understandings

Misconceptions

  • There are 12 inches in a foot (length of a ruler).
  • There are 3 feet in a yard.

  • There is a half way mark in between inches to provide a more accurate measurement.

  • They must start at the “0” mark or the very first tick mark on the ruler, yardstick, or tape measure to get an accurate measurement.

  • Labeling units is unnecessary or unimportant.

  • Metric units are the same as customary units (1 cm. = 1 in. and 1 m= 1 yd.).

  • They start measuring at the “1” versus the “0”.

  • The measurement is always where it lands, no matter if it starts at the “0” or not. For example: Students may think this is 10 in. instead of 8 in.
