Unit 7: Money and Time

Target Objectives

Worthwhile Task Indicators

Example Tasks

Money Task

  • Visually shows how coins can be exchanged

  • Assesses a life skill students will need to be able to do

  • Promotes procedural fluency (counting coins)

  • Develops logical reasoning

Time Task

  • Connects to a skill students will use in real life

  • Gives students the flexibility to choose a strategy that works for them to solve the problem

Coin Box (Money Task)

https://illuminations.nctm.org/coinbox/

  • This is a teaching tool to help students understand the value of coins and how to find the fewest amount of coins to represent a given value.

  • Use this on a smartboard or students can use their iPads (if district provides) to find the value of coins and exchange coins based on their value. (ex: two dimes and a nickel can be exchanged for a quarter)

  • If you click the hundreds block in the bottom right corner of the screen, students can see how the coins relate to one another based on their value.

Creating a Morning Schedule (Time Task)

http://3-5cctask.ncdpi.wikispaces.net/3.MD.1-3.MD.2

(Click 3.MD.1 Task 1 to print the task)

  • Students create a schedule for two different students based on the time they need in the morning.

  • This would be an excellent task to complete in partners or to use as an assessment after teaching unit on time.

There are two other tasks there that could be used as challenge activities since they do not work with “5 minute intervals”.
