7th Grade MAPs

Throughout their Pk-12 education experience, mathematically literate students will:

Develop a Deep and Flexible Conceptual Understanding

Students will continue applying mathematical concepts to their everyday lives. They will use the concept of proportionality in context to understand and explain the relationship between tables, graphs, symbols, verbal descriptions, and other models. Comparisons and links between unit rates, proportions, rates of change, and slope are front and center as students move between multiple representations. Students are able to transition between percents, decimals, and fractions in order to develop an understanding of how and when to apply and use each form during problem-solving.
Develop Accurate and Appropriate Procedural Fluency
Students will begin creating algorithms and applying them to increase efficiency and accuracy. Students will engage in activities to discover formulas and procedures to determine areas of trapezoids, find area and perimeter of composite figures, and calculate circumference and area of circles to make sense of how these concepts apply in contextual situations. Students will use symbols to solve mathematical situations and they will apply an understanding of the properties of operations and how they allow building of equivalent expressions. Students will use technology and other means to check for the reasonableness of a solution and justify their findings.
Develop Strategies for Problem Solving
Students will use concepts and procedures to analyze challenging mathematical situations.  The students will determine reasonableness of different approaches to problem solving and judge the efficiency of multiple models. Students begin designing experiments, collecting data, and making predictions about measures of central tendency, scale representations, and probability. The students will use a variety of tools in mathematics and will develop the ability to determine when it is useful and necessary to use technology and tools to deal with data and to justify outcomes.
Develop Mathematical Reasoning
Students will use modeling strategies as a means to communicate and justify their mathematical arguments and counterarguments when exploring rational numbers and proportional relationships as well as other grade level conceptsThe students will apply  logic to proportional reasoning to assess whether solutions are mathematically sound and make connections to other contexts using tables, graphs, and other models.
Develop a Productive Mathematical Disposition
Students will develop the belief that math is sensible and worthwhile. The students will be able to use strategies to cultivate a positive mathematical identity to critique the mathematical world they live in. Students will model using tables, graphs, symbols as a way to look for a make use of patterns and mathematical structures, and use verbal descriptions in a way that mirrors how they will use math as adults.

Develop the Ability to Make Conjectures, Model, and Generalize

Students will develop algorithms and procedures through the actions of identifying patterns. Students will explore measures of central tendency and graphic representations to draw conclusions and apply their findings to rationalize the world they live in.
Develop the Ability to Communicate Mathematically
Students will use mathematical terminology to describe the world they live in. They will interpret and translate mathematical ideas involving rational numbers, ratios, and proportional relationships effectively with their peers and teachers to explain their understanding of mathematical concepts. Students will engage in explorations and discussions on a regular basis both orally and in writing.
