4.GM.2.5 Solve problems that deal with measurements of length, when to use liquid volumes, when to use mass, temperatures above zero and money using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division as appropriate (customary and metric ).


In a Nutshell

The students will be able to solve problems dealing with measurement of length, temperature above zero, and money, using all operations.  Students will solve problems involving when to use liquid volume or mass.  Length, liquid volume, and mass may be expressed in both customary and metric units of measurement.

Misconceptions

  • Knowledge of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division may be applied to solve problems involving length measurement, temperature above zero, and money.

  • In scenarios involving the measurement of a quantity of matter, the terms liquid volume and mass are not interchangeable, and apply to specific types of measurement situations. 

  • Performing the math operations with length measurement is the same as with whole numbers (i.e., failure to consider the units of measurement, as in feet or yards, and operating in base-ten format.)
  • Multiplying or dividing money amounts is operationally different from multiplying or dividing with whole numbers (i.e., failure to recognize that the operation is the same, but the notations - dollar signs and decimals - must be included). 
  • Mass and volume are the same.
  • Measurement is only linear.
