• Develop a deep and flexible conceptual understanding of decimals by connecting them to real-world uses, such as with money.
• Develop the ability to communicate mathematically by reading, translating and communicating decimal quantities in verbal and written formats.

• Use and connect mathematical representations by providing examples of decimals in real-world contexts (i.e., money, increments of time (tenths or hundredths of a second), temperature, or weight on a digital scale).

• Support productive struggle in learning mathematics by providing opportunities for students to make the connection between decimals as numbers in the classroom, and decimals in the real-world.

• Implement tasks that promote reasoning and problem solving by introducing problem scenarios having multiple entry points for reading, writing, and using decimals in a variety of contexts.

Misconceptions

• Reading, writing, and communicating about decimal numbers and the quantities they represent can facilitate understanding many real-world situations. 

• Terms such as tens and tenths or hundreds and hundredths are interchangeable.
• The word 'and' can be used anywhere when saying a number and has no significance.  The use of the word 'and' actually signifies the decimal point.
